I think I would prefer the HF 44991-2VGA to the Grizzly G8689 because the HF has R8 spindle taper while the Grizzly has mt#3. Both are close in specs. Both have dovetail columns which is a big plus. These are small machines but should do a hobbiest fine until you decide on a bigger one. Use the money you save to buy tooling.

Grizzly G8689 mini-mill motor controller repair. While experimenting with my G8689 CNC conversion, I allowed a grounded wire to come into contact with terminal 7 of the G8689 motor controller. The fuse was blown and the controller was damaged. LMS sells these as their part number 1211. Since LMS was out of stock I went ahead and fixed mine.

Anyway, I am looking into buying a tabletop vertical mill. I have narrowed it down to two finalists. First, the sherline Model 5400 and secondly the Grizzly G8689. I am not sure of the quality and tolerances of the grizzly, but have heard very good things about the sherline, with tolerances of .0005 or more. This is fine for my small shop.
