Graver Sharpening & Honing Jig. Sharpening gravers by hand is a skill requiring quite a bit of practice. The trouble lies in keeping the graver at exactly the same angle and flatness during each stroke against the bench stone. A common cheat used by many a watch and clockmaker is to use a sharpening jig.

Single pass honing is done with a diamond abrasive, boring bar type honing tool. This type of honing tool produces a straight, round, and un-tapered bore in one pass of the tool through the part. Single pass honing is ideally suited for honing engine crank and cam bores.

If you prefer a double bevel, make the grinding angle 5° less than the honing angle. A general purpose chisel, for example, is ground at 25° and honed at 30°. The 25-degree bevel is called the 'grinding bevel'; you'll use a bench grinder to renew it. The 30-degree bevel is called the 'honing bevel'; you'll use a honing stone or sandpaper to create it. Grinding goes fast, but honing can be slow. If your chisel had only one bevel-the 30-degree one-you'd have to hone its entire surface to get a sharp edge.
